I've always been captivated by the allure of the great outdoors, and Colorado's wilderness areas never fail to impress. With over 40 of these pristine sanctuaries, one might assume that every trail has been trodden and every peak conquered. But nestled within the Byers Peak Wilderness, Lake Evelyn remains a secluded paradise, rarely gracing the itineraries of even the most avid hikers.
What makes this destination truly unique is its seclusion. Imagine embarking on a journey where you're more likely to encounter a falling tree than a fellow human! The reviews on AllTrails attest to this solitude, with hikers often reporting zero encounters. It's a place where nature's serenity reigns supreme.
The adventure begins with a drive from Winter Park, a mere 24 miles that unravels into a 90-minute expedition. The road, a metamorphosis from dirt to roughness and eventually rocks, meanders through a picturesque forest and meadows. Upon arrival at the trailhead, a quaint circle parking lot welcomes you. Here, a register and a map beckon, offering a glimpse into the area's topography. The trail bifurcates, one path leading to the St. Louis Divide Trail and Bottle Peak, while the other whispers the secrets of Lake Evelyn.
As you set off, the trail, an old road embraced by towering trees, runs parallel to Evelyn Creek. A gentle incline, gaining 900 feet over 1.6 miles, is your companion. Keep an eye out for a subtle sign, easily overlooked, directing you across a bridge over the creek.
